Our overall health and well-being have much to do with the integrity and wellbeing of our gut health. The gut microbiome is a collection of microbiota genomes that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract (GI). It is an incredibly diverse system and, in fact, is referred to as an integral body organ with multiple vital bodily functions.
The gut microbiome includes over 200 trillion microbial cells and over 1000 different species most of which are bacteria but also include protozoans, archaea, and eukaryotes. These gut microbes support many critical functions including nutrient metabolism and digestion, immune function, pathogen response, maintenance of the gut’s barrier and integrity, and enteric and central nervous system function.
Disturbances in makeup and integrity within the gut microbiome can affect the way the gut functions. A change in the bacterial composition is known as dysbiosis and can lead to gut barrier dysfunction. If the tight junctions between cells that line the gut mucosa are compromised, unwanted substances can leave the gut and enter the bloodstream. Damage to the gut barrier is known as intestinal hyperpermeability or leaky gut. Any or all of these issues can make it even more difficult to lose weight.
Some illnesses and medical conditions, certain foods and additives, and various medications can affect the microbiome of the gut in a negative way. Likewise, there are healthy lifestyles and foods and products that can support the gut and ultimately health. Some such products that can support gut health include pre and probiotics. We highly recommend reading GUT RENOVATION by Roshini Raj, M.D. This book describes the connection between the gut and the brain and how to reset both for better health.
